Visiting the French National Assembly has gotten easier!

Visiting the French National Assembly has gotten easier!

Visiting the French National Assembly has gotten easier!

The Palais Bourbon is a government building located in the 7th arrondissement of Paris, on the left bank of the Seine, across from the Place de la Concorde. It is the seat of the French National Assembly, the lower legislative chamber of the French government. The Palace was originally built beginning in 1722 by Louise Françoise de Bourbon, the duchess of Bourbon, the legitimized daughter of Louis XIV, as a country house, surrounded by gardens. It was nationalized during the French Revolution, and from 1795 to 1799, during the Directory, it was the meeting place of the Council of Five Hundred, which chose the government leaders. Beginning in 1806, Napoleon Bonaparte added the classical colonnade, to mirror that of Church of the Madeleine, facing it across the Seine and the Place de la Concorde. The Palace complex today includes the Hôtel de Lassay, on the west side of the Palais Bourbon; whi…

Rosa Bonheur Book Event at the Book Room

Rosa Bonheur Book Event at the Book Room

Event! To conclude the 2022 celebrations of our namesake Rosa Bonheur's bicentennial Bill & Rosa's Book Room is hosting award-winning historical novelist Natacha Henry on December 3rd at 4pm. Ms Henry will present her book THE FRENCH PAINTER AND THE AMERICAN SHOWMAN: THE UNLIKELY FRIENDSHIP OF ROSA BONHEUR AND BUFFALO BILL. This historical novel tells the moving story of the unlikely encounter between French animal painter Rosa Bonheur and the American entertainer Colonel William Cody, aka Buffalo Bill. In 1889 Rosa Bonheur, France’s best-known animal painter, is living in seclusion in her chateau near Paris. One day, she reads that Buffalo Bill and his Wild West Show are coming to France. Rosa Bonheur sees a unique opportunity: she will be able to draw real American bison and wild mustangs. New inspiration! The American West always fascinated her. She might even get to meet and paint portraits of the Lakota Sioux who are also part of the Wild West Show. But will the fe…

Rosa Bonheur Bicentennial Continuing Celebrations

Rosa Bonheur Bicentennial Continuing Celebrations

As you probably know Bill & Rosa's Book room was named for the showman Buffalo Bill and the painter Rosa Bonheur (learn who Rosa was here). March 16th is Rosa's birthday and this year, 2022, is the Rosa Bonheur Bicentennial. To celebrate her 200th birthday here's a sampling of the events which include the naming of Rosa Bonheur's rose, the launch of a postage stamp, retrospective exhibitions at the Musée d'Orsay and the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux, exhibition at the Château de Fontainebleau, publications, conferences, documentaries, tributes... At Rosa Bonheur's Chateau Exhibition: The Museum of the missing artwork The Château de By, just outside Paris near Fontainebleau, Rosa's residence for nearly 40 years, is, in 2022, full of effervescence for this big anniversary. The kickoff happened last week when their new exhibition space was inaugurated. The first exhibit is called Le Musée des oeuvres disparues or the Museum of the missing artwork. Throughout her lif…

Festival America

Festival America

Festival America, held every other year in Vincennes, to the east of Paris, will be taking place between 22 and 25 September. It brings together over sixty writers not only from the United States, but also from Canada, Quebec, Mexico, Cuba and Haiti, in a bid to acquaint the French public with North American literature and culture. The festival was first organized in 2002 and has since become one of the highlights of the French literary calendar — around 45,000 people are expected to attend this year. This year’s edition will bring together 63 guests, including Jonathan Franzen, Louise Erdrich, Richard Ford, Russell Banks, Joyce Maynard, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Emma Cline, Natasha Trethewey, Julie Otsuka, Viet Thanh Nguyen, Jake Lamar (who was at the Book Room to talk about his latest novel, Viper’s Dream, just last spring. You can read an interview with him here ) and many others, around the theme ‘Voix d’Amérique’ (Voices of America): voices of writers who speak about past trauma …

Popcorn America’s favorite snack

Popcorn America’s favorite snack

USA National Popcorn month is October. (It was established 30 years ago by the Popcorn Board.) National Popcorn Day is 19 January and Popcorn Lover's Day is celebrated on March 12. Decidedly America loves popcorn and so does FUSAC. Corn itself is very American and goes way back before the first Thanksgiving. There is archaeological evidence that popcorn was available in Central America 9000 years ago. Popcorn was an important food for the Aztec Indians, who also used popcorn as decoration for ceremonial headdresses, necklaces and ornaments on statues of their gods. Americans today grow and eat lots of corn and most of the snack foods they eat are corn based. This is different from France where many snacks are potato based. Popcorn is scientifically known as Zea mays everta.  Popcorn is a whole grain and is made up of three components: the germ, endosperm, and pericarp or hull.  The 4 most common types of corn are: sweet, that you can eat right off the cob; dent, more …

People ask me for directions all the time

People ask me for directions all the time

People ask me for directions all the time. Sometimes I feel like it must be written on my forehead or on my bike helmet "Don't know where you are going? Ask me for directions". Happily I usually can point them in the right direction and don't mind doing so. I find it to be a sort of compliment and it underlines to myself that I live in this beautiful city called Paris. This time though the experience was a bit trying - at first. I was riding my bike back to the office along the Seine. There is a section right by the Eiffel Tower that is a bike path and it is just wide enough for one bike. It is not a sidewalk, but there are always tourists on it and it is kind of a pain to get past them. I ding my bell and they usually step off onto the dirt between the the trees and let me pass. That night I was behind two women. One in silver lamé pants, high heels and a short white furry jacket. I later saw a sparkly necklace too. The other in conservative pants, shoes, long …

Jigsaw Puzzles!

Jigsaw Puzzles!

At Bill & Rosa's Book Room we are fans of jigsaw puzzles. One of our ideas was to always have a puzzle in progress at the Book Room for a collective effort. We even found a puzzle of Rosa Bonheur's painting of Buffalo Bill! That was to be our first one, but Covid has pushed that idea to the back burner for now. However at home puzzle time has grown with Covid. It's a great quiet, yet concentrated, relaxing activity away from screens. We just discovered that Larousse, one of our favorite editors, publishes jigsaw puzzles. They have something for everyone. Our favorites are the series in progress by Monsieur Z. Richard Zielenkiewicz, known under the pseudonym Monsieur Z, is a French illustrator and graphic designer living in the south of France. He has created hundreds of colorful posters for French cities and regions as well as other European cities. On these puzzles his colorful retro world transports you to the Alps or to the south of France! Pretty much any puzzle is grea…

Christmas Crackers, come make you own

Christmas Crackers, come make you own

We may be originally from America but we like to adopt the best traditions from where ever they come. One of those is the British Christmas Cracker. Make your own Christmas crackers from old books at our workshop at the Book Room on 11 December 2021, 16h. The workshop is open to everyone over 11 years old and will be conducted in English, albeit American English, but come on over for some fun. 3€ per person covers supplies. We'll provide everything including a template you can take home. Sign up at Brbookroom@gmail.com Limited by available space to 8 participants. At Christmas you can make personalized crackers with the contents and designs specially chosen for your family and friends or buy them in a store. Either way they are set on the table as part of the festive decor and are opened when everyone sits down. Each person takes the ends of a cracker and pulls. Or with arms crossed everyone holds their own cracker in their right hand and pulls their neighbor’s cracke…

New oaks for rebuilding Notre Dame de Paris

New oaks for rebuilding Notre Dame de Paris

Rebuilding Notre Dame Last Fall while riding bikes through the Forest of Marly we saw some freshly cut oak tress of impressive size. We imagined them to be the new elements for rebuilding Notre Dame. We were a bit ahead in our thinking as the selection of trees has started in March 2021. Oak trees from French forests will be selected for rebuilding Notre Dame's own  “Forest” and another roughly 1000 for Violet-le-Duc's wooden steeple. The Forest of the cathedral is the framing that holds up the roof and consolidates the walls. It burned dramatically in 2019. The original medieval beams came from thousands of different oak trees and because of the size of the structure it was a rare architectural work admired by professionals the world over. Beginning 2021 was the time to choose the trees that will be used to rebuild this structure so that they can be harvested by the end of March before the spring growth begins. They will come from all over France from both public and p…
