Mavis Gallant was an acclaimed Canadian short story writer, who left Canada for Europe in the 1950s. She settled in Paris for many years and the city is the setting for many of her stories. She died in Paris and is buried in the Montparnasse Cemetery. She made her name writing about the dislocated and the disposessed. In unsentimental prose she addresses the isolation, detachment, and fear that afflict rootless North American and European expatriates.
The Collected Stories of Mavis Gallant is a generous collection of fifty-two stories, selected from across her prolific career by the author and includes a preface in which she discusses the sources of her art.
